Abstract

The purposes of this study are to develop the educational materials for the right positional habits related to the back pain and to investigate the effect on the structured education with those materials to the patients with HNP. The sample of this study includes 27(16 for control group and 11 for experimental group) patients with HNP admitted to orthopedic ward in E University Hospital in Seoul from July 12th to November 11th 1999. The questionnaire was used to collect the data. The questionnaire for this study included 11 items related to personal characteristics and 15 items related to the positional habits. This is designed by the investigators using relevant literature arid a previously designed questionnaire developed by Shin (1993). The content validity of this questionnaire is established through the critical review of the questionnaire by one nursing professor, one orthopedic professor and one Head Nurse. The statistical tests used in the analysis of data included frequencies, percentage, mean and standard deviation, Chi-square test, and T-test.
The findings of this study are as follows:
1) As a result of comparing the overall means of items related to positional habits at the time of admission and 2 weeks later from the discharge, there is no significant difference found within the control group which had not received the structured education by the time differences (t=-1.278, p.22l). However, a significant difference is found in the experimental group which had received the structured education(t=-6.15, p<.OO1) and 7 items among 15 items is showed significant differences(p<.05) between the means of each item of the two groups after 2 weeks from the discharge. 2) As a result of comparing the overall means of items related to positional habits in the control group and experimental group after 2 weeks from the discharge, there is a significant difference was found in positional habits between the means of two groups(t=-3.751, p.OO1). 7 items among 15 items is showed signifkant differences (p<.05) between the means of each item of the two groups. Therefore, the findings of this study indicates that the structured education is effective to change the right positional habits related to the back pain.
